The new Motorola Droid phone hit the market this week offered through Verizon. The current droid phone models are often compared to the Apple Iphone 4 and sell for about the same price depending on the model. So what are the big differences between these 2 phones.
There is not really that much they both have applications although are there lots more applications for the Iphone but there are plenty for the droid as well that you can buy and load up on them. They also offer similar hardware in terms of processor, video etc. Now the Iphone 4 did have some issues when it was released but those issues are being corrected by Apple. The hardware tech with the Droid which has a 1GHz OMAP processor which significantly boosts the speed over the original Droid which is similar to the Iphone4. The Droid 2 supports 8GB Internal Memory and 8GB pre-installed microSDcard. It has 3.7″ Touch Screen and 480×854 WVGA Display which supports up to 16M colors and once again this is very similar to the Iphone.
There are some personal things I do like more about the Droid 2 is that the phone does offer a key pad. The current phone I have only has the touch pad which I really don’t care for maybe it is my big fingers not sure but it takes me a long time to type messages and do other functions. Another important ingredient for some people would be the networks which offers the different phones, AT&T which offers the Iphone and Verizon which offers the droid.
Both of these service providers are well known but there has been more reported issues with AT&T networks which are known for dropping calls plus bad smartphone traffic management in metropolitan areas. The Verizon networks had proven more reliable with Smartphone traffic and still offers unlimited data plans where AT&T instituted a 2 GB data cap.
I do admit that Apple does seem to have better marketing for their products, however when it comes down to looking at real features and design I find that the Droid offers just much of the same value. Both phones would do the task that I am looking for however for me personally I would pick the Droid over the Iphone partly because of the key pad and partly because of the better quality network service offered by Verizon. Of course you might have a difference choice for your other reason but as an former engineering technical person this just my choice.
So which Phone do you like and why?
